A Brief History of the Kruger National Park and Kruger Safaris
In 1898, Paul Kruger, President of the Transvaal (now encompassed within Gauteng and Mpumalanga) proclaimed the Sabi Game Reserve to protect the animals of the South African Lowveld from the ravages of hunting. In 1926, in honour of Paul Kruger, the Sabi Game Reserve became the Kruger National Park and became known internationally as a premier safari destination. Now, over 100 years after its inception, the Kruger Park is South Africa's largest wildlife and safari park. Situated in the province of Mpumalanga in eastern South Africa, the Kruger Park ranks among the best safari game reserves in all of Africa and offers a true wildlife experience.
Covering nearly 2 million hectares, the Kruger National Park extends 350 km from north to south and 60 km from east to west. Aside from Kruger Safaris, conservation and responsible eco tourism are the main focus of the Park, which strives to support local developing communities. Diverse wildlife is the primary attraction of the Park and each Kruger safari provides visitors with a unique game viewing experience.
A Kruger Safari offers one of the few opportunities in Africa to see Africa's Big 5; the Leopard, Lion, Rhino, Buffalo and Elephant. Sightings of all 5 in one day are rare, which is why a stay of at least two or three days is recommended. However, there are few days when you won't be able to see at least 3 of the 5. Book your Kruger safari and Park accommodation with Outlook Safaris; we manage the details so you can relax and have fun.
The Big 5 are by no means all that safaris in the Kruger National Park have to offer. With over 336 species of trees, 49 species of fish, 114 different kinds of reptiles, 507 varieties of birds and 147 mammal species, the Park has something for everyone.
Whatever your preferred method of holidaying in the Kruger Park, from guided safaris and day drives to walking, cycling and camping safaris, and from a luxury lodge to budget accommodation, Outlook Safaris offers you the wildlife holiday of a lifetime. Contact us now for more information on a unique small group Sabi Sands reserve and Kruger Park Safari, or subscribe to our newsletter and keep up to date with Kruger Safari news and happenings in the Park.
